Jeff Hardy made his first appearance since his horrific crash and burn at WWE Hell in a Cell, and he jumped right into the fire by taking on Samoa Joe in a Qualifying Match for the WWE World Cup at WWE Crown Jewel.

The Samoan Submission Machine was looking to unleash the anger he was harboring after coming up just short in his quest for the WWE Title at WWE Super Show-Down and wasted no time looking to batter his smaller opponent.

Hardy would refuse to stay down though, rallying back on Joe every chance he could. At the height of the action, Joe seemed to re-tweak the knee he had injured against AJ Styles this past Saturday, and Jeff aggressively targeted the injured body part, even as the referee tried to pry him away from Joe. The relentless Hardy almost seemed like a different person as he continuously attacked the weakness.

Soon, the official deemed that The Samoan Submission Machine was too harmed to continue, leading to him calling for the bell and awarding the match to Jeff Hardy via referee stoppage.

The Charismatic Enigma was back, and he seemed like a changed daredevil after his Hell in a Cell experience.

That Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton’s Hell in a Cell Match ended the way it did is less than surprising: Hardy’s rivalry with Orton had become far too stomach-churning to conclude with something as quaint as an RKO and a pinfall, and The Charismatic Enigma has been in search of a blaze of glory inside Hell in a Cell for some time now. He found one.

For Hardy, competing inside Hell in a Cell was one of the last few milestones he’d yearned to achieve in WWE, though he fought like a Superstar stepping into his eighth dance in the cage rather than his first. With the psychological advantage he usually possesses rendered obsolete, Orton had no choice but to battle Jeff with pure brutality: After wearing Hardy down with lashes from his own belt, The Viper produced a toolbox from under the ring, pulled out a screwdriver and threaded it through Hardy’s earlobe, twisting the tool around and around in a sickening display until The Charismatic Enigma finally beat him away with a low blow.

Revitalized by Orton’s savagery, Hardy saw red. The Charismatic Enigma propped a chair on Orton’s chest and executed a pinpoint Swanton — aggravating The Viper’s already-wounded back — before erecting a sinister setup involving two ladders (a short one and a tall one) and a table. After propping Orton up on the table, Hardy scaled the smaller ladder, seemingly planning a leapfrog. Then, he audibled onto the taller one, seemingly planning a Swanton. Then, Hardy left the ladders entirely, suspending himself from the Cell roof like monkey bars, dropping for what appeared to be some kind of splash on The Apex Predator.

Only Orton moved. And Hardy crashed and burned, shattering the table in his attempt to put Orton away. Much to the referee’s horror, Orton made the cover and insisted on defeating his opponent with a 1-2-3, and the official counted the pinfall, if only to get The Apex Predator out of the ring so EMTs could strap Hardy to a stretcher and wheel him away. It was the result Orton wanted for sure, and, perhaps, the one Jeff Hardy wanted as well. After all, he said would take Randy Orton to hell with him. He didn’t say anything about coming out.

With Jeff Hardy wanting to “cleanse his soul” prior to his clash inside Hell in a Cell with Randy Orton this Sunday, The Charismatic Enigma looked to settle his unfinished business with United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura in non-title action on SmackDown LIVE.

Hardy’s pent-up aggression was evident from the start, as the daredevil stormed out of the gates, bringing an early onslaught to The King of Strong Style despite Nakamura’s attempts to stall. As the match wore on, Nakamura was able to ground Hardy with his smothering and impactful offense, but Brother Nero flat out refused to quit.

In the pivotal moments, Hardy appeared to be closing in on a victory when The Viper suddenly struck from out of nowhere, and threw Hardy off the top rope. Orton then began a brutal assault on The Charismatic Enigma that saw him smash his head into the ring steps repeatedly and then grab a steel chair and laid Jeff out with several brutal shots. The Apex Predator would not stop there though, attempting to lay Hardy out with an RKO, but Hardy was able to counter, give Orton a taste of his own medicine with the steel chair and then lay him out with a Twist of Fate and Swanton Bomb respectively.

Advantage Hardy.

Jeff Hardy finally got a measure of retaliation on Randy Orton last week when he drove Orton’s body through a table with a massive Swanton Bomb off electrical equipment. The Charismatic Enigma arrived on the blue brand tonight claiming that he felt born again after pummeling The Viper one week earlier, and he was now intent on finishing what Orton had started. Hardy was eager for a confrontation with WWE’s Apex Predator, but Orton — averse to appeasing the WWE Universe — refused to give his foe the satisfaction.

Unphased by Orton’s mind games, Hardy made a bigger challenge to The Viper for the WWE Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event… inside Hell in a Cell itself! Hardy would have to wait for a response though, as Orton simply dropped his microphone and walked away without response.
